Rick Owens presented his Fall 2002 “Sparrows” collection as his official runway debut collection, revealing a world of muted glamour and rough edged restraint. The show unfolded in a stark, shadowed setting set to a heavy soundtrack of Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop, and Godflesh, and centered on a palette of off whites, grays, deep blacks, and taupes. Among the draped dresses, elongated knits, and distressed leathers, the brown corduroy blazer in look 3 showed how Owens used tailoring within this brooding environment. It features sharp lapels, a compact and clean silhouette, layered welt pockets, and elongated sleeves, while the shoulders are shaped with thick padding that gives the piece a firm and structured silhouette. Owens’ focus on the back of a garment, seen throughout the collection in fishtail forms and rounded hoods, also guides the blazer’s subtly contoured rear profile. This black version is made from soft virgin wool, giving it a smoother and more refined surface than the textured corduroy seen on the runway. It retains all the original construction details with the welted pockets still sewn shut, though the wash tag is no longer present, a common occurrence in early Rick Owens pieces as they were loosely stitched and often came off over time through wear, storage, or cleaning.
